Hi! I made a video on CapCut that took me awhile and it wouldn’t export, so I updated the program. I didn’t receive any message that my project would be lost. When the app updated, my project was gone. Please tell me there’s a way to get my project back. Is there something I can do?
Hi,
Try out the following ways with which you can try to get back your project:
1. Check CapCut's trash or recycle bin:
- Accessing trash:
- Open CapCut on your device.
- Navigate to the "Home" screen.
- Look for the "Trash" or "Recycle Bin" option (depending on the version you are using).
- Look for recycle bin within your computer.
- Restore projects:
- If your project is listed, select it.
- Click on the "Restore" button to recover it.
Note: Deleted projects are typically stored here temporarily before permanent removal.
2. Search for auto-saved files:
- Locate auto-save folder:
- On your device, navigate to CapCut's installation directory or designated project save location.
- Look for folders named "AutoSave", "CapCut", "Projects" or "Backup." The location varies depending on your operating system (iOS, Android, macOS, Windows).
- Recover project files:
- If you find recent files corresponding to your project, open them in CapCut to restore your work.
3. Cloud Sync:
- Did you have any cloud syncing enabled for CapCut? If you were logged in and had any cloud backup or sync features turned on, there is a chance your project might be recoverable from the cloud. Go to CapCut and click on "Cloud" in order to see all the files saved on your Cloud.
4. If you exported parts of the video:
- If you exported any parts of the video (even short clips) while working on the project, those exported files are not lost. You can re-import them into CapCut and try to reconstruct as much of your project as possible.
- Make sure your device has enough free storage. Sometimes, if storage is low, CapCut can have trouble saving or managing files.
5. Utilize data recovery software:
- Third-party tools:
- Consider using data recovery applications like iMyFone D-Back or 4DDiG Windows Data Recovery.
- These tools can scan your device for lost or deleted files and may help retrieve your project.
- Caution:
- Ensure you download software from reputable sources to avoid potential security risks.
Note: While these tools can be effective but there is no guarantee of full recovery.

6. Contact CapCut support:
- Reach out to CapCut's customer support either within the app or through this contact form. Alternatively you can email them directly at [email protected].
- Provide detailed information about your project and the circumstances under which it was lost.
Note: Support team will have specific tools or methods to assist in recovery.
Preventative measures for the future so that projects are not lost permanently:
- Regular backups:
- Frequently back up your projects to external storage or cloud services.
- CapCut provides 5 GB of cloud storage to free accounts. Turn on sync and auto save options so that you can be relaxed and rest assured that projects are getting saved.
- Export project files:
- Periodically export your project files, not just the final video, to ensure all elements are saved.
- Cautious updating:
- Before updating the application, ensure all current projects are saved and backed up.
We hope these steps assist you in recovering your lost project.
